The Pillars of Caste

Exposing the forces behind social stratification

This is a design experiment heavily borrowed from Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Specifically, I focused on communicating her third chapter, "The Pillars of Caste," through an eight-piece poster series.

The Pillars of Caste are features of caste systems in various societies, such as India, Nazi Germany, and even the invisible system inside the USA. Because of them, caste systems hold their power indefinitely.

I loved the chance to communicate the complex ideas in this chapter using nothing other than hands, some color, and Helvetica. The process, however, ended up as distressing as the subject matter. I wouldn't have called it a fun project. The result is not a bunch of posters I would hang in my room. They serve as reminders of systems we have yet to break down.
